Spousal Violence

Violence or abuse is a pattern of behaviour to build power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence. This happens when one person believes he/she is entitled to control another. In using violence in a relationship, the relationship invariably deteriorates and the cycle of violence may continue. Emotional, verbal, psychological, financial, physical and sexual abuse may be common in such relationships. Both men and women are capable of violence though statistics show that more women are inflicted by physical abuse. There are several explanations to the use of violence – family dysfunction, inadequate communication skills, and stress, chemical dependency such as alcohol or drugs, economic hardships and/or lack of understanding on the fundamentals of a connected intimate relationship.
