Emotional and psychological trauma
Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of an extraordinary stressful life event that shatters a person's sense of security. Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety but if a situation leaves one feeling overwhelmed and isolated, it can also be traumatic. The more frightened and helpless one feels the more likely the person is traumatised. Emotional and psychological trauma can be caused by an accident, injury, violent attack (intentional violence or witnessing violence), surgery (especially in the first three years of age), the sudden death of a loved one, break-up of a significant relationship or a humiliating or a deeply disappointing experience.
